Rossa Update - New Instrument Panel

The Rossa was originally built with a Metro instrument panel - not the best looking of instruments, but that was what GTM intended.
The mechanical speedometer was driven by a 12 foot long cable which eventually snapped, as did the cable that replaced it.
Another problem was that the steering wheel hid part of the speedometer (the range 30 to 70 mph!).
To cure these problems I decided to replace the Metro Instrument panel with individual instruments mounted on a panel of my own design. The new speedometer is an electronic one that gets an electrical pulse signal from a sensor mounted to the end of a 12 inch long adaptor drive cable that screws into the normal hole in the gearbox. The speedometer is then calibrated using a pushbutton on the face of the instrument and the menu on the odometer/tripmeter LCD.

The Speedometer & Revcounter The 80mm diameter speedometer and revcounter are from the VDO cockpit range. The warning lights around them are aranged to be visible inside the arc of the steering wheel. The instrument panel is made from a piece of 15mm plywood covered in grey leathercloth. The panel is secured to the dashboard using six stainless steel button headed allen screws.
The wiring loom All of the wiring from the instrument panel is brought out to four multiway connectors to allow easy removal of the panel.
The completed panel The six gauges on the left of the panel are (top row) oil pressure, voltmeter and manifold pressure (all of these are made by TIM). Along the bottom row is water temperature, fuel and a clock. The clock is a VDO item, the other two are by Racetech. The Racetech fuel gauge is compatible with the Mini fuel tank sender. At night, when the gauges are illuminated, the Racetech and VDO gauges are far easier to read with their illuminated pointers.
The new look The colour match between the leathercloth and the dashboard moulding is much closer than this photograph suggests. From the driver's eye level, the speedo, revcounter and warning lights are within the arc of the steering wheel.
